What is the Art of Tai Chi?
Tai Chi Chuan is the ancient Chinese form of moving meditation. It is based on the Taoist
understanding that all things comprise of the harmony of two complementary forces,
Yin and Yang.
The word “Tai”(太)means “Supreme”, “Ji” (极 or Chi) means “Boundary” and the word “Quan” (拳 or Chuan) means “fist” or “movement”. Together the term “Taijiquan” or Tai Chi Chuan implies a method and discipline of movement through energetic postures that helps to cultivate a form of power. This power, also known as Chi or Prana, is an intelligence that teaches us to understand boundaries whilst connecting to the elements of nature. This roots the unformed into the formed - grounding an intelligent active spiritual energy. Tai Chi is an ancient form of discipline, a gentle martial art practice that produces and engages in the uses of pranic energy vital for the shifting of energy to promote healing.
The roots of Tai Chi are not entirely clear. Some legends state that Tai Chi originated from a Taoist monk who developed energetic moving exercises for the purpose of health and healing.
The reason it is called the Art of Tai Chi is because the pranic energy is not just being used in the form of set meditations or moving meditations. The energy was also used for the purpose of self defence. To use a spiritual energy to protect oneself from an attack becomes an art. This is why we can become Masters in the moment we understand this very truth. Mastery comes from correct use of energy, not a misuse of energy. This is the mastery!
